Ladakh is the land of high passes, is at the extreme northern end of india also known as the Trans Himalayan region. The three dominant mountain ranges in this area are the Zanskar, Ladakh & the Stok ranges which marks the boundary between the western Himalayas & the vast Tibetan plateau.
Even the low valleys in the region for example the Nubra Valley are at altitude of 3050 m / 10, 500 ft. Travelling at these heights, the massive snow clad peaks do not tower over you but merely an arm stretch away. The crystal clear atmosphere, the clear blue skies, the star studded night sky & the patterns in the mountain with its myriad hues remind us of a master artist at work which is our mother Nature.
The easiest way to reach is by Air with a direct flight to Leh over the massive Himalayan range. But if want to take in the lung full of fresh air which will recharge your soul, then hit the road.
When I first decided to do the journey, I was skeptical whether a small car will be suitable for the journey. But let me assure you at the outset, you can take any car for this journey. And for the bike lovers, this is the mother of all adventure.
But if you want to do an expedition by yourself, then here is the complete information in order for you to prepare for the most exciting trip. When equipped with this information you can plan meticulously and hit the road. Well, the best way anyway is to be spontaneous and keep your plan flexible.
There are a few choice of routes that can be taken
- Delhi - Srinagar - Leh - Manali - Delhi
- Delhi - Manali - Leh - Flight Back to Delhi
- Delhi to Leh by Air & Return Drive to Delhi via Srinagar or via Manali
Right now, we are providing information for Drive from Delhi to Leh via Manali. Shortly we will add complete information for other routes as well.
Most will recommend doing the Manali - Leh drive in 2 Days ( i.e. Manali to Sarchu & Sarchu to Leh ) which will make your driving time close to 11-12 hrs for each leg. We believe it is too hectic and you wont enjoy the drive, the drive is best done at a leisurely pace, taking stops at where ever you like and just soaking in the nature, have a tea break or just stop by the stream.
Reaching destination is not the goal but enjoying the drive is the goal. It makes for the wonderful corollary in real life as well, enjoy each day of life because Life is a journey too, because if you are not enjoying each day of your life chances are you would not like your destination as well.
